John Lennon sang, “Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

Kristin Cappelli knows what he meant. Early in her career, she gave new meaning to landing a “dream job” when she did just that … while in a coma.

⏱️Take 2 quick minutes to see how rolling with the punches taught Kristin everything happens for a reason ... and the hardest things to do are the most rewarding.

I have to hear about your accident.

I started my career in HR more than 20 years ago. Interned, got my Master’s Degree, was hired full-time and eventually promoted to HR manager working with the VP of HR and the CEO.

And then, I got in a bad car accident that put me in a coma.

And that’s when you got a job offer?

That's right. A luxury fashion house offered me my dream job and I didn’t find out until I woke up eight weeks later.

What was recovery like?

In my mind, I could do all the same things as before the coma, but in reality, I had to learn to walk and move again. After a few months, I moved to NYC where I walked everywhere and that really helped.

How did that experience change you?

I learned everything happens for a reason. Sometimes you have to accept that things don’t happen according to your plans. Our scars are there to remind us of the past.

How did it help during COVID-19?

We had to roll with the punches and recover quickly to get staff equipped and working from home. But the positive side was that the convergence of work and home ended up allowing people to bring their whole, authentic selves to work.

HR is evolving. What do you want people to know about it?
