President of Global Content Distribution at HBO discusses her career and being a “citizen of the world.”

A conversation with Berny Aulestia.

As part of Verizon’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we welcomed Bernadette “Berny” Aulestia, President of Global Distribution at HBO, to speak with employees. Berny was named one of Fortune's 2018 50 Most Powerful Latinas in Business and one of Fast Company’s 2017 Most Creative People in Business.

In a wide-ranging conversation with Erin McPherson, Head of Content Strategy, Acquisition and Programming at Verizon, Aulestia discusses the evolution of media, how content is being consumed, consolidation taking place across the industry and what the future holds. Aulestia also shared how growing up in an Ecuadorian household and “citizen of the world” impacted her journey and who she is today.

According to Aulestia, “as a content creator, it's a really exciting time in terms of the innovation around how we tell our stories, where we tell our stories, even the format in which perhaps we might tell our stories.” She goes on to say that “convenience is trumping quality” in how we watch content, something that is most prevalent in younger generations.

She also discussed the importance of recognizing people's differences and that “there is real power in always being tremendously conscious of how to create inclusive environments for everyone.”
