CSX Transportation To Utilize MCI Satellite Services

MCI Expands Access Capabilities to Include Satellite Services in Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska and U.S. Territories

ASHBURN, Va., January 28, 2004 - MCI (WCOEQ, MCWEQ) today announced that it is providing CSX Technology, Inc., the technology subsidiary of CSX Corporation (NYSE: CSX), owner of the largest rail network in the eastern United States, satellite services at railroad remote operating locations across the eastern United States. In addition, MCI said it is expanding its broadband access services to include new broadband Satellite service options with higher bandwidth capabilities and international coverage.

By teaming with MCI, CSX is able to quickly deploy a common access solution virtually everywhere - in metropolitan, suburban and the most geographically remote areas of the U.S. CSX Transportation, which operates more than 23,000 miles of railroad track in more than 23 states and the District of Columbia, plans to utilize MCI's satellite services to connect U.S. based railroad-switching stations that facilitate the transport of goods across the country.

"We needed a ubiquitous communications solution that was able to connect our remote locations back to the corporate network," said Tom Blady, assistant vice president, Communication Solutions, CSX Technology. "MCI's broadband satellite services are helping us improve our business processes while enabling new capabilities. MCI was able to provide us with this specific technology solution as well as the critical customer service component we needed to deploy a new network solution."

By combining the universal access capabilities of satellite with the unrivaled reach and reliability of its global IP backbone, MCI is able to deliver a high performance access service where other connections, such as DSL, are limited or unavailable. In addition, satellite services do not have the same restrictions traditional broadband access solutions must overcome because there are no local exchange carriers involved and no "fiber to cut".

"Satellite allows business to extend access beyond the limited options of the local phone network to places where access has never been previously available," said Jim DeMerlis, MCI vice president of Product Management. "MCI's satellite services can supplement and complement traditional access methods for companies like CSX who have widely-dispersed business operations."

With the addition of Tachyon Networks, Inc. services to MCI's access service portfolio, MCI is now able to provide broadband satellite services in the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guatemala and Canada. In addition, MCI has extended its satellite services portfolio to include terrestrial back up services, quick deploy and customized service packages, with bandwidth capabilities up to 2Mbps and service level agreements.
