Senior Recruiter Giorgia Gostoli shares her top tips for learning new career skills from home.

1. Setting goals.

One of the best ways to create your learning plan and make sure you stick to it is to set goals for yourself. What do you want to accomplish in six months? A year? 

After setting goals, choose a format that best suits your learning style. Do you learn better by watching videos, reading articles, or attending training sessions? Then, schedule time for learning and make sure you have no distractions — truly dedicate this time to focusing on achieving your goals. 

2. Learn alongside a teammate.   

Setting goals is only half of it — you also need to make sure you’re making progress as time goes by. A great way to hold yourself accountable for your professional development and growth is by engaging on your learning journey with a teammate or friend. 

Jillian Cole and Michele Brookshire are work BFFs who met while working on an event together. Since then, they’ve become inseparable and an integral part of each other’s support systems. Dream teams like this can be a big help in keeping you motivated to stay on track. Having that support when working remotely can really help you accomplish things and stay on task.

3. Take advantage of online resources to help you learn and grow. 

An absolute favorite among our team is going online to find fun and engaging ways to upskill. Resources like LinkedIn Learning, YouTube videos, and podcasts are just a few favorites.

Using our Verizon learning portal available to employees, recruiter Chevonne Gaines was able to find training videos related to the skills she most wanted to learn. She was able to learn about fostering critical thinking by asking questions driven by curiosity. This was a skill that she wanted to master, and she took it upon herself to learn while at home. Way to go, Chevonne!
