MCI and Akamai Technologies Deliver IP-Based Video Streaming Solution to Attract New Subscribers to Gallup Web Site
ASHBURN, Va., October 26, 2004 - MCI, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCIP) today announced it is helping The Gallup Organization to attract new Internet users to its Web site by providing the streaming solution behind its new free daily news Webcast at www.gallup.com. The Gallup Poll Daily Briefing, powered by MCI's advanced IP services and Akamai's (NASDAQ: AKAM) on-demand computing platform, delivers the public's perspective on timely issues such as the presidential debates and the war in Iraq. Gallup is offering the free Web service to draw new subscribers to its other content, including public opinion polling data, educational courses and professional business services.
"So much of the news today is what leaders and pundits think," said Jim Clifton, chairman and CEO of The Gallup Organization. "Gallup's mission is to create a unique program that reports the voice of the people. We have placed this new resource on the Internet rather than traditional TV because technology is revolutionizing broadcasting as we know it. Like Gretzky recommends, 'go where the puck is going, not where it is.'"
Since the September 13 launch of the Gallup Poll Daily Briefing, the video newscasts have been watched more than 140,000 times with the average viewer spending just over six minutes during each visit. Anchored by Gallup's well-respected pollsters and public opinion journalists, the multiple-segment video newscasts have covered a number of pressing issues, including the effect of rising voter rolls, latest results from key showdown states and where the youth vote stands.
"MCI worked closely with Akamai to build an advanced capability for Gallup," said Nancy Gofus, senior vice president of Product Management for MCI. "This best-of-breed video streaming solution is just one example of how MCI continues to extend its IP network and applications to help our customers grow their business."
With the MCI/Akamai solution, Gallup Web site visitors can now easily view the eight-minute Gallup Poll Daily Briefing right from their desktop with a simple click of the mouse. This solution leverages Akamai's proprietary streaming technology and global content distribution platform to deliver consistent and reliable, high-quality streams for dramatically increased download success rates for on-demand viewing, day or night.
Since 1985, MCI has been the primary communications provider for Gallup worldwide. In addition to providing new IP-based video streaming solutions, MCI helps Gallup meet its business needs through a comprehensive package of advanced voice and data communications services including IP Data Center Services and Internet connectivity. MCI provides Gallup with a frame relay data network that enables its remote offices worldwide to receive cost-effective video training as well as tap into distance learning from Gallup University in Omaha, Nebraska. Leveraging the global reach of its network, MCI also provides the international voice services that Gallup uses to conduct public opinion polls around the world.
