Background: Today the Clinton administration announced its
decision to relax controls on the export of encryption technologies.
The following statement should be attributed to Vinton G. Cerf, MCI
WorldCom Senior Vice President, Internet Architecture and
Technology:
"The Clinton administration's decision to relax controls on
the export of encryption technologies is the most significant piece of
cryptology policy in the last 10 years. The administration delivered on
its promise to review export control policies and MCI WorldCom hails
its decision to abandon unnecessary restrictions. Such restrictions
have hindered both the growth of electronic commerce and the protection
of online privacy. With this action, U.S. companies will be able to
fully participate in the global marketplace for computer and software
sales, online services and new electronic applications."
