Bell Atlantic to Demonstrate Infospeed DSL Service Using Compaq Presario
PCs at CompUSA Stores in Northern Virginia and Pittsburgh
Consumers Invited to Check Out Always-On, High-Speed
Internet Access Service This Saturday, Dec. 12
December 10, 1998
NEW YORK -- Consumers are invited to CompUSA stores in Northern Virginia
and Pittsburgh this Saturday, Dec. 12, to see demonstrations of Bell Atlantic
Infospeedsm DSL, an always-on, high-speed Internet access service now available
in the Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh metropolitan areas.
The demonstrations will highlight the capabilities of Infospeed DSL using
Compaq Presario Internet PCs. In addition, customers will be able to go online to
determine if Infospeed DSL service is available in their neighborhood as well as
order the service while they are shopping at CompUSA.
Infospeed DSL is Bell Atlantic's brand name for ADSL, or Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line technology, which provides Internet access to consumers at
speeds 11 to 126 times faster than a 56 kilobits per second (Kbps) modem. By
taking advantage of unused capacity available in existing telephone lines, the
technology allows consumers to use a single phone line to send faxes or make
phone calls while they're surfing the Internet.
Bell Atlantic and Compaq representatives will be on hand at the demonstrations
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Vienna store at 8357 Leesburg Pike in the Tyson's Corner
area and in the Pittsburgh store at 1165 McKinney Lane, Parkway Center Mall.
The Infospeed demonstrations will remain in the CompUSA stores after Saturday
so customers have the opportunity to check out the service anytime and order
while they are shopping at CompUSA. In the future, additional CompUSA stores
will have similar demonstrations and customers will be able to order Infospeed
DSL while they shop in the stores.
Bell Atlantic, CompUSA and Compaq Computer Corp. are working together to
bring always-on, high-speed Internet access to the homes of thousands of Bell
Atlantic customers. In addition to in-store displays, CompUSA will provide technical
support services through the CompUSA Technology Call Center as well as sales
support. And, in the future, CompUSA will provide high-speed Internet training
powered by DSL and installation services. Selected Compaq Presario Internet PCs
come factory-equipped with the Ethernet port necessary to provide Infospeed DSL
service. Compaq is a leading supplier of home PCs offering consumers the best possible
Internet computing experience with the fastest and easiest Internet access.
