BELL ATLANTIC RESPONSE TO ADELPHIA COMMUNICATIONS
THAT IT PLANS TO PROVIDE TELEPHONE, INTERNET ACCESS SERVICES IN
DOVER TOWNSHIP, N.J.
Attribute to Len
Lauer, president and CEO,
Bell Atlantic-New Jersey, Inc.:
Let the games begin. Bell Atlantic has a gold medal winner
Township: a world-class telecommunications network that's offering
consumers affordable, reliable telephone service and a high-quality
alternative for their cable and video services.
Competition: That's what the recently passed
legislation is all about. We welcome Adelphia to the arena. Bell
Atlantic has provided the very best phone service to Dover Township
and New Jersey consumers and businesses for more than a century. We
also are operating a state-of-the art network that has allowed
programmers to compete -- quite successfully -- for Dover Township
consumers' video business since the beginning of this year.
Adelphia and other cable companies must address a number of
technological hurdles before they can widely deploy cable modems for
high-speed Internet access. Bell Atlantic, on the other hand, can
meet consumers' requirements today for high-speed access to the
Internet and on-line services, as well as remote access to local area
networks, with our ISDN service. ISDN transmits
voice, data and video
signals at speeds much higher than conventional analog modems. And
ISDN is here now.
Adelphia doesn't have to wait for New Jersey regulators to act before
initiating negotiations for interconnection agreements that are
necessary to provide local telephone service. The company is free to
start the process with Bell Atlantic now. We encourage Adelphia to
contact us if it's truly serious about its claims. We're
