Delaware County, Pa., Residents to See More Choice, Competition as Verizon Obtains Seven More Cable Franchises

MEDIA, Pa. - More residents of Delaware County are a step closer to having choice for their cable television services, thanks to recent votes by seven municipalities authorizing Verizon to offer its fiber-optic-powered FiOS TV, from the most advanced fiber-optic network straight to customers' homes. The cable franchises cover approximately 35,000 households in the boroughs of Swarthmore, Media and Ridley Park, and the townships of Upper Providence, Nether Providence, Marple and Springfield.

"The Delaware County municipalities have done right by their constituents in acting to bring long-overdue, and much-needed, choice and competition for cable TV," said William B. Petersen, president of Verizon Pennsylvania.  "Verizon's FiOS TV offers a superior alternative to the incumbent cable providers - fueled by our lightning-fast fiber-optic network."

Only Verizon's FiOS network has earned the certification of the independent Fiber to the Home Council for providing fiber all the way to customers' homes.

The seven municipalities join 14 additional Delaware County communities that have said yes to cable competition and awarded franchises to Verizon covering 21,000 households.  The others are:  the townships of Thornbury, Radnor, Bethel, Aston, Concord, Middletown, Newtown, Chadds Ford and Edgmont, and the boroughs of Chester Heights, Marcus Hook, Folcroft, Glenolden and Sharon Hill. Verizon now has a total of 21 franchises in the county, covering 56,000 households.

FiOS TV offers a broad collection of all-digital programming, two dozen high-definition channels, video on demand and more.  It is delivered over Verizon's fiber-to-the-premises network, which has industry-leading quality and reliability. Fiber delivers amazingly sharp pictures and sound, and has the capacity to transmit a wide array of high-definition programming that is so clear and intense it seems to leap from the TV screen.

In addition to FiOS TV, Verizon's fiber network also allows the company to offer consumers and businesses high-speed FiOS Internet Service at download speeds of up to 30 Mbps (megabits per second) and upload speeds up to 5 Mbps.*  FiOS Internet Service currently is available to consumers and small businesses in parts of Delaware County, as well as parts of Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties.

* NOTE: actual (throughput) speeds will vary.
