Collection Drive Kicks-Off Verizon Wireless Domestic Violence Awareness Month Activities in Philadelphia Tri-State Region

August 23, 2002

To benefit local domestic violence victims, the Verizon Wireless Granite Run Mall Communications Store will collect no-longer-used wireless phones at the Upper Chichester Community Day at the borough's recreation center field on Sunday, September 1. Representatives from the store will accept no-longer-used wireless phones of any make or model at the Verizon Wireless booth. The collection drive will support the company's HopeLineSM program, which distributes previously owned wireless phones to victims of domestic violence, supports non-profit domestic violence advocacy groups and provides an environmentally safe method for recycling phones.

The collection drive is one is a series of activities Verizon Wireless is planning throughout September and October in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Earlier this year, Verizon Wireless and Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham joined together to raise awareness of domestic violence in the greater Philadelphia area by launching the "Spring into Action Against Domestic Violence" wireless phone donation challenge. Residents of the Delaware Valley met the challenge by donating 5,450 no-longer-used wireless phones to the company's HopeLine program in May.

"The HopeLine Phone Recycling program is an easy way for community-minded citizens to support local domestic violence organizations as they help abused women re-build their lives," said Christine Baron, president of Verizon Wireless' Philadelphia Tri - "Domestic violence does not discriminate. It's all around us in places most of us would never imagine. Citizens who support the program could very well be helping their own friends or neighbors."
As a result of HopeLine and related phone recycling programs the company has organized since 1995, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 500,000 used wireless phones for the benefit of domestic violence victims and advocacy groups, including those in the suburban Philadelphia area.

Donations are also accepted at the Granite Run Mall Communications store on an ongoing basis. For more information about HopeLine, call 1-800-426-2790 or visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/jsp/aboutus/community_service/index.jsp.
