James A. Attwood named executive vice president - strategic development and planning for GTE

STAMFORD, Conn. - GTE Corp. today announced that it has named James A. Attwood executive vice president - strategic development and planning, reporting to GTE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Charles R. Lee.
Attwood, 40, most recently was vice president - international business development for GTE.
In this new position, Attwood assumes GTE-wide strategic planning responsibilities, including conducting competitive analysis, coordinating business unit planning and development activities, and providing leadership on mergers, acquisitions and strategic transactions for GTE. He will also become a member of GTE's executive council, which advises Lee on strategic issues impacting GTE as a whole.
In his recent GTE International assignment, Attwood identified and assessed new business opportunities outside of Asia, including the pursuit of strategic alliances and new ventures, and the completion of transactions. He played important roles in the pending purchase of the Puerto Rico Telephone Company, and the assessment of opportunities in Europe, Brazil and other Latin American countries. Previously, as vice president - corporate planning and development, he was instrumental in the acquisition of BBN.
Attwood joined GTE in 1996 as vice president - corporate planning and development after more than 10 years in the investment banking division of Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York and Tokyo. Previously, he was in the actuarial group of Hewitt Associates in Rowayton, Conn. He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a master's degree in statistics from Yale University, and earned juris doctor and master of business administration degrees from Harvard University.
