New Line Cinema and Verizon Wireless Forge Unprecedented Two-Year Relationship To Support the Theatrical and Home Entertainment Releases of the Remaining Two Films in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

New Line Cinema has forged an unprecedented two-year alliance with Verizon Wireless to create a broad range of promotions tied to The Lord of the Rings that will cross broadcast, print, radio, online and in-store support as well as exclusive wireless content for Verizon Wireless customers who use Get It Now SM, Mobile Web by VZW with MSNTM and Mobile MessengerSM. Russell Schwartz, president, domestic theatrical marketing, New Line Cinema, and John Stratton, chief marketing officer and vice president for Verizon Wireless, made the joint announcement.

This partnership, which kicks off today in anticipation of the December 18, 2002, theatrical release of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, spans two years, during which it will encompass the December 17, 2003, theatrical release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and the home video and DVD releases of the final two films in the trilogy.

"Verizon Wireless is an outstanding partner for The Lord of the Rings and will support these films in unique and exciting ways that speak to the limitless possibilities inherent in this property," Schwartz said. "We are tremendously excited that they have made this two-year commitment to these films."

Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless service provider and a leader in wireless data, will be New Line's exclusive wireless partner in the United States and will offer many levels of promotions throughout 1,300 Communications Stores and kiosks in all major markets throughout the United States and online at www.verizonwireless.com/lotr. The two-year partnership will also offer significant promotional opportunities to several divisions within New Line, including national promotions, interactive, marketing, home entertainment and licensing.

Utilizing the abundant inventory of imagery, icons, design elements and streaming material available from The Lord of the Rings films, Verizon Wireless will distribute wireless content such as games and chat rooms exclusively to their customers.

Verizon Wireless has also developed a co-branded website, www.verizonwireless.com/lotr, that carries exclusive content and will also sponsor a Lord of the Rings-themed sweepstakes on Moviefone.com. The wireless leader will also be the promotional sponsor of the broadcast premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers special on the WB network and the re-broadcast of the special on TNT.

New Line Cinema presents The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Peter Jackson's epic adventure scheduled to open December 18, 2002. The trilogy represents an unprecedented undertaking - three films made simultaneously over a year and a half of production. The first film in the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, was released December 19, 2001, to widespread critical acclaim and garnered $860 million worldwide. The film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, more than any other film in 2001, and won four.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers stars (in alphabetical order) Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, Brad Dourif, Bernard Hill, Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, Miranda Otto, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, Karl Urban, David Wenham, and Elijah Wood.

The screenplay, by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Stephen Sinclair and Jackson, is based on the classic trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. The film is produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne. Also executive producing is Mark Ordesky. The director of photography is Andrew Lesnie, A.C.S.
