RICHMOND, Va. -- The roll out of more than 1 million copies of the Bell
Atlantic 1998-1999 Yellow and White Pages for the Richmond area was the focus
of Bell Atlantic's "Bringing Information to Your Community" presentation today
at the Library of Virginia.

The directories, which begin distribution today, feature an illustration of the
Library of Virginia on the cover and an Internet Guide for novices bound in the
Yellow Pages. At an unveiling ceremony, Del Humenik, vice president, Bell
Atlantic Directory Group, presented Nolan Yelich, Librarian of Virginia, with a
framed cover of the new directory.

In support of Bell Atlantic's commitment to Internet education, Humenik donated
a check for $2,500 to the Senior Center of Richmond, which will be used to
improve Internet access and training for both seniors citizens and their caregivers.
Executive Director Dede Foerster accepted the check on behalf of the Senior
Center.

As part of Bell Atlantic Yellow Pages commitment to children's literacy, Humenik
presented a $10,000 check to Gay Robinson, president of the Richmond Area
Reading Council. The donation will support the "Books for Babies" program, in
which gift baskets of books and instructional materials are given to new mothers to
encourage reading to newborns from birth through childhood.

"The Richmond Area Reading Council believes in fostering children's literacy at
the earliest stages of life," said Robinson. "With the support we received from Bell
Atlantic, our organization will now be able to continue and expand the work of the
"Books for Babies' program in helping mothers foster their child's lifetime love of
reading." The Richmond Area Reading Council is a 600-member organization of
teachers, parents, and professors dedicated to promoting literacy in the greater
Richmond area.

As part of the children's literacy program, 100 copies of Maurice Sendak's book
Where the Wild Things Are and bookmarks, autographed by actor and Bell
Atlantic spokesperson James Earl Jones, were given to the employees of the
Library of Virginia for the institution's stocking-stuffer holiday charity.

"The Library of Virginia and Bell Atlantic both serve as very important resources
of information, upon which many depend," said Yelich. "We are honored to be
featured on the cover of the new directory, and applaud the efforts of Bell Atlantic
to bring children's literacy and Internet technology for the elderly to our
community."

Humenik praised the Library of Virginia and the many volunteers and community-
focused organizations in Richmond: "Today's ceremony honors our elderly and the
people who care for them, our children and the people who help them grow in
mind and spirit, and the Library of Virginia, which stands as a source of knowledge
for everyone. Bell Atlantic is proud to be a part of the life of your community."

The new directories start delivery to area residences and businesses this month.
The Yellow Pages include a revised Internet Guide -- a 12-page tabbed insert --
with helpful information on hardware and software requirements, a glossary, a
step-by-step approach for connecting to the web, tips on choosing an Internet
service provider and a list of recommended local and national web sites.

"The Internet Guide is a great resource for using the Internet," said Foerster. "We
are very conscious of how important the Internet has become, and are grateful to
Bell Atlantic for providing funding that allows us to make the most of our Internet
access for our seniors and their caregivers." The Senior Center of Richmond
promotes independent living for senior citizens through a variety of educational,
recreational and therapeutic programs, and also serves as a resource center for
caregivers in the community.

New to the 1998-1999 Yellow Pages is InfoSCENE®, a visitors' guide that
showcases area attractions, entertainment and dining. The guide includes color
photographs and maps, along with a telephone number that allows consumers to
access a free voice-response service featuring timely information on menus,
schedules and shows.

Another consumer feature in the new Yellow Pages is InfoTips®, a free service
that allows users to obtain recorded consumer information on various topics,
ranging from bicycles to tax preparation by calling a local phone number. The
Richmond area Yellow Pages listings also feature an optional extra line for e-mail
and web site addresses in response to increasing use of the Internet.

The new White Pages for Richmond also include recycling information designed to
educate consumers on what, where and how to recycle in their area.
