APPLE VALLEY, Calif. - The efforts of 17 nonprofit groups to promote literacy and job development across California were bolstered today by almost $1 million in grants from the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the nation's largest local telecommunications provider.

Verizon announced the grant winners during a ceremony at the Newton T. Bass/Apple Valley Branch of the San Bernardino County Library. The library's Hi Desert Adult Reading Experience is the recipient of one of this year's largest grants, worth $150,000. (NOTE: A link to the list of grant recipients appears at the end of the news release.)

"Verizon strongly believes in investing in the communities it serves to create a literate, well-educated and technologically fluent work force," said Tim McCallion, president of Verizon's Pacific region. "Verizon is committed to increasing the prosperity of all Californians through grants like those we are giving today and by building a state-of-the-art fiber optic network that will deliver new telecommunications services and create new jobs."

This year, the Verizon Foundation will provide more than $4 million in grants, contributions and sponsorships to benefit communities in California.

The foundation uses its resources in the United States and abroad to develop partnerships in technology and connect them with organizations serving the needs of diverse communities, people with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, and the economically and socially disadvantaged.

The foundation also supports Verizon Volunteers, an incentive program that last year encouraged Verizon employees to volunteer 595,000 hours in their communities. For more information on the foundation, visit www.verizon.com/foundation.
