BASKING RIDGE, N.J. - To make it easier for businesses to collaborate over their IP networks by employing advanced video-meeting capabilities in their daily operations, Verizon Business is teaming with Nortel to deliver a new managed telepresence service.

The managed service, which complements Verizon Business' existing video collaboration portfolio, provides complete setup and management of telepresence conferences, including pre-connected and configured video circuits, and the ability for users to make conference reservations online.

"There's a tremendous opportunity for companies to make their IP networks work harder and smarter as a platform for visual, instantaneous collaboration," said Nancy Gofus, senior vice president of global business products for Verizon.  "With this new managed offering, users will find that setup and operation of video meetings is as easy as just walking into a conference room, enabling participants to focus on the meeting rather than the mechanics."

Telepresence transmits life-size images and replicates face-to-face interaction so realistically that participants feels as though they are all sitting in the same room - whether they are located across town or on different sides of the world.  This capability reduces the need for travel, which can result in lower operations costs and increased productivity, while also helping companies preserve the environment.

Verizon Business is using Nortel's extensive global infrastructure of Multimedia Network Operations Centers (MNOCs), in combination with Verizon Business' global Private IP service, to effectively manage more video-enabled IP endpoints for customers around the world.

In addition, the managed service employs Nortel video-bridging and gateway services, enabling enterprises to take full advantage of video systems from several leading equipment providers. Interoperability is especially important for business-to-business conferencing between companies using video gear from different suppliers.  Nortel's managed telepresence portfolio also includes proactive testing, 24 x 7 network performance monitoring, recording, on-demand playback and metrics reporting.

Verizon Business is a leading provider of unified communications and collaboration services, enabling organizations to conveniently and effectively collaborate, virtually anytime, anywhere, and helping them improve response time and productivity without the costs and carbon emissions associated with business travel.   With more than 30 years of experience delivering conferencing services, Verizon Business today handles millions of virtual meetings each month through a wide range of audio, video and Web-conferencing offerings; IP-based services; and some of the most advanced meeting tools available today.
