NEW YORK - In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Verizon will donate computer-learning stations with free Internet access to six elementary schools in Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, Washington, D.C., and New York. The company's program, called Achieve Your Dreams...Preserve Your Heritage, also includes the gift of a 650-volume, bilingual library by Scholastic Inc. to each school.

"Education and technology are very important needs in the communities we serve. This program is just one of the many ways we're showing our commitment to the Hispanic community," said Emilio Coronado, Verizon's group manager, Hispanic marketing. "What better way to help young people than to encourage them to cultivate such a rich heritage and to provide them with the tools they'll need to make progress in their lives."

The schools that will receive the gifts are: Edison Elementary in Los Angeles; John W. Runyon Elementary and Brandenburg Elementary in Dallas; Louis Agassiz Elementary in Boston; Powell Elementary in Washington, D.C.; and Public School 073 in the Bronx.

Verizon will also sponsor an essay contest in seven states -- California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Texas and Virginia -- and in Washington, D.C. Residents are invited to share stories of how they achieved their dreams while staying in touch with their Hispanic heritage.

Throughout the Achieve Your Dreams...Preserve Your Heritage program, Verizon will honor the example of Eduardo Genao, a local superintendent of education in New York City. Genao, who worked at two jobs while attending college and graduate school for 12 years, earned a master's degree and now specializes in school administration and supervision.

The computer workstations will be customized for each school and include operating and bilingual educational software. During the year, students at the six schools will receive assistance in using the workstations and software from members of the Hispanic Support Organization, a group of Verizon employees who volunteer their time to help the Hispanic community.

After a donation ceremony at each school, students will attend a reading session with a surprise, Hispanic celebrity guest.

The bilingual book donation is supported by Verizon Reads, the umbrella organization for the company's literacy platform, and Scholastics Inc., a global children's publishing and media company.

To enter the essay contest, individuals must be at least 15 years old and reside in one of the seven states or Washington. Entries of 500 words or less, in English or Spanish, should be submitted to Verizon Logra Tus Suenos...Conserva Tu Herencia Essay Contest, P.O. Box 44086, Blair, Neb., 68009- 4086 and must be received by Nov. 14. Writers of the best essay in each state and the District of Columbia will each receive a $2,500 cash prize.
