Verizon Expands Its Next-Generation IP Services Into New Markets, Adds Private Line Access and Lowers Rates for Most Customers

NEW YORK - To make its Internet protocol virtual private network (IP VPN) services more appealing and to give large businesses a new choice for voice, video and data convergence, Verizon has expanded into new markets, extended service for customers using private line access, and lowered its rates for the majority of customers.
Verizon now offers its MPLS-based VPN services in 109 markets, including the top 97 cities in new markets such as San Francisco and Milwaukee. As part of this effort, Verizon added private line access this month, enabling point-to-point or multi-line point-to-dedicated access. In the past year, Verizon has lowered its long-distance prices and moved technology closer to its customers, making its services more competitively priced.
"We're delivering on our customer promise to enhance our IP VPN portfolio to offer a real choice to many businesses that we couldn't reach before at a competitive price," said Eric Bruno, vice president - product and portfolio management for Verizon Enterprise Solutions Group. Verizon's IP VPN Service
Verizon originally launched its IP VPN using technology called multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) service in May 2004. Verizon chose network-based MPLS to enable customers with ATM, Ethernet, or frame relay to easily send data and voice in packets over a shared network. With the addition of private line access, customers that use multiple access methods (ATM, frame relay, Ethernet) can communicate more easily via the service.
Verizon supports four routing protocols for its IP VPN service - Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), static routing, Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF). Verizon's basic service is designed for low-priority data traffic but its premier level offers four classes of service designed to support:
- Class 1 - real-time services such as voice over IP
- Class 2 - data-burst transmission applications such as compressed video
- Class 3 - high-priority data needed for transaction-oriented applications
- Class 4 - e-mail and Web browsing
