Verizon is conducting the only live demonstration in the U.S. of technologies that facilitate near real-time provisioning of broadband bandwidth services.
On Friday (June 19), the company's network laboratory in Waltham, Mass., will host the Optical Internetworking Forum's (OIF) global interoperability demonstration. The OIF Carrier Lab Day is one of a handful of live demonstrations, all part of the OIF 2009 Worldwide Interoperability Demonstration - Enabling Broadband On-Demand Services.
Verizon is the only U.S.-based carrier among seven carriers participating in this OIF multicarrier, multivendor trial, which began in March. The live demonstration will focus on control plane and data plane technologies, which simplify operations for carriers, enable faster provisioning for customers, and provide the basis for broadband bandwidth-on-demand services as well as improved network reliability and availability.
Dr. Stu Elby, vice president of network architecture for Verizon, will deliver the keynote address at the demonstration.
"As OIF comes to the conclusion of its 2009 broadband on-demand services demonstration, it's important to highlight the collaboration of all the parties that worked to advance interoperability of control and data planes," Elby said. "We know from our own experience serving Verizon's large-enterprise and wholesale customers that the combination of bandwidth-hungry services and delay-sensitive applications means it's imperative that the industry focus on the network mechanisms that will dynamically deliver circuits end-to-end."
Verizon has been participating in the test of control plane and data plane technologies with Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) services over diverse transport technologies, including packet transport technologies, next-generation TDM and both wavelength and TDM transport. The demonstration shows multidomain end-to-end restoration of service using E-NNI (external-network to network interfaces) between vendor domains.
The test phase of the event has been under way in the Waltham lab, as well as in the labs of China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Orange Labs - France Telecom Group, KDDI R&D Labs, NTT and Telecom Italia. The participating suppliers are Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena Corporation, Ericsson, Huawei Technologies, Marben Products, NEC Corporation of America, Nokia Siemens Networks, Sycamore Networks, Tellabs and ZTE Corporation.
This is the fourth time Verizon has participated in the OIF's multicarrier, multivendor interoperability tests and demonstrations. These tests have been useful in evaluating technologies for Verizon's Just-in-Time and Bandwidth-on-Demand services.
The seven test sites are linked by virtual, or real, E-NNI connections, forming a global test network topology. During the test phase, carriers can access network resources beyond their existing networks, thus testing compatibility with multiple vendor implementations on a global scale.
A live demonstration was showcased at iPOP on June 11 in Tokyo, with another regional live showcase to be held at IIR Telecoms WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking event on June 25 in Nice, France.
In September 2008, Verizon announced the industry's first commercial network trial of control plane technology across multiple supplier domains. Verizon demonstrated integration of the optical control plane with Verizon Business' circuit-provisioning operations support system for dynamic flow-through and rapid provisioning of bandwidth services.
OIF's Worldwide Interoperability Demonstration 2009
Seven of the world's largest telecommunications companies, including Verizon, will unite under the banner of the Optical Internetworking Forum to showcase multi-vendor interoperability in a multi-carrier environment at the OIF's Worldwide Interoperability Demonstration - Enabling Broadband On-Demand Services. The OIF's fourth worldwide interoperability test and demonstration will be conducted simultaneously in China, Japan, France, Germany, Italy and the United States. The event highlights network-interoperable solutions among participating vendors employing OIF UNI 2.0 and E-NNI implementation agreements.
