Roberts will oversee the company's operations and financial matters in the District of Columbia and assume responsibility for Verizon's public policy, external affairs and regulatory matters in the District.  He retains similar duties for Verizon in Maryland and will have offices in Washington and Baltimore.

"Bill lived and worked in Washington for 20 years before becoming president of Verizon Maryland, and his expanded responsibilities now match his standing as one of the Washington metropolitan area's most respected business leaders," said Colleen A. McCloskey, Verizon senior vice president-state public policy and external affairs.  "He brings to the District a wealth of telecommunications industry experience and a track record of personal commitment to Verizon's customers and the communities we serve."

Roberts said, "Washington and Maryland present tremendous opportunities for Verizon to succeed and, at the same time, significant competition.  I'm eager to work with our talented and dedicated employees to capitalize on the opportunities to meet the communications, broadband and entertainment needs of the District's consumers and businesses."

Roberts began his telecommunications career in Washington as a customer service center supervisor with C&P Telephone Co. and has held a number of key positions in operations, human resources, marketing, public affairs and government relations.  He was named president of Verizon Maryland in June 2000 after serving three years as director for government relations in Verizon predecessor Bell Atlantic's federal office in Washington.

Roberts serves on several boards, including the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, the Kennedy Krieger Institute, MedStar Health and the National Aquarium.  He also is on the board of trustees at Villa Julie College and the board of regents at Morgan State University.

Roberts received his bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing from Morgan State University and pursued graduate studies at Eastern Michigan and Howard universities.  He also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and the University of Maryland University College.

A native of Easton on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Roberts and his wife, Cherie, have one daughter, Hilary, and live in Chevy Chase, Md.
