RESTON, Va. - Verizon Online announced today an updated portfolio of DSL (digital subscriber line) products and services to meet the wide range of needs of the business DSL customer. This new product line, offered since May 1, expands Verizon's DSL speed options to meet the increasing bandwidth requirements of business customers and introduces a robust portfolio of Web-hosting services and business-class e-mail services.
''We are stepping up to the plate to address the needs of small and medium-size businesses for broadband Internet access and associated services,'' said Tim Eggleston, director - business products for Verizon Online.
Verizon Online's business DSL services are available now in six options throughout most of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast states that comprise the former Bell Atlantic markets and in five options in those markets that comprise the former GTE territories.
Verizon's dynamic IP (Internet Protocol) service is now available in six packages in the former Bell Atlantic territories, with maximum connections speeds ranging from 768Kbps/128/Kbps (downstream/upstream) to 7.1 Mbps/768Kbps.
For the first time, businesses in the Northeast also have two symmetrical DSL options from Verizon Online, with maximum connection speeds of 384Kbps/384Kbps and 768Kbps/768Kbps. The packages range in price from $59.95 per month to $204.95 per month and include six e-mail boxes, 20 MB (megabytes) of personal Web space and 20 hours of analog dial-up access. Additional analog dial-up access is $1.95 an hour.
Verizon Online's static IP product is available in five speed choices. These range from 768Kbps/128Kbps maximum connection speeds to a symmetrical 768Kbps/768Kbps in those Verizon markets that comprise the former GTE territory. With static IP, business customers can host their own servers. These packages range from $69.95 to $169.95 and include six domain name e-mail boxes, domain name registration/transfer and DNS (Domain Name System) service for one domain name.
The new speeds and static IP business packages are available today in the former GTE territory with the exception of California, where they are expected soon. The new speeds and dynamic IP business packages are available today in the former Bell Atlantic territory with the exception of New Jersey, where they are expected later this year. Verizon Online hopes to offer both dynamic and static IP across the entire Verizon service territory by end of the year.
Web Hosting and Outsourced E-Mail Available in All Verizon Markets Today
Small and medium-size businesses can further tailor their Internet services to meet their specific needs with Verizon Online's optional advanced services: shared Web hosting and outsourced e-mail. These business services are available in all Verizon markets today.
''Shared hosting is an economical, flexible Web solution for small-to-medium-sized businesses looking to establish an online presence,'' said Eggleston.
The suite of Verizon Online shared hosting service includes business-class Web hosting, design services and consulting services. It is a full complement of products to meet the most basic to more complex Web-hosting needs.
Businesses that are looking for an alternative to building and maintaining an in-house e-mail solution will want to consider Verizon's outsourced e-mail service. This optional advanced service enables small and medium-size firms to establish domain name e-mail using customized domains
(mailbox@specificcompanyname.com). All mailboxes are compatible with Internet-standard mail clients (Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express, Netscape, and Eudora). Each is equipped with a Web-mail browser tool for remote access and maintenance.
New customers sign one-year contracts and will pay a fee for early cancellation. There is no price change for existing customers. Verizon will honor all current contracts. For more information on Verizon Online's business DSL products, visit our Web site at www.verizon.com/dsl
All the downstream and upstream speeds describing Verizon's DSL services are theoretical maximum connection speeds between the customer's computer and Verizon's DSL equipment. Actual connection speeds will vary from the maximum speeds and often will be lower. Throughput, or download, refers to the speeds at which data is transferred to a customer's computer from the Internet and are lower than connection speeds. Download speeds will differ based on numerous factors, including the length (or distance) of the customer's line from telephone company switching equipment, condition of the phone line and inside wiring, network and Internet congestion, and the server and Web-site configurations of the Internet sites visited.
Kilobits per second (Kbps) and megabits per second (Mbps) are measures of how fast data is transmitted. The data rates for ''downstream'' and ''upstream'' refer to the maximum connection speeds between a customer's computer and Verizon's DSL equipment.
