PHILADELPHIA -- Verizon Pennsylvania has named Tabb J. Bishop to a newly created position as director of public policy, based in Philadelphia.
Bishop, currently deputy chief of staff in the executive office of the president of Temple University, will assume his new position with Verizon March 1. At Verizon, Bishop will assist in developing the company's public policy strategies in the commonwealth. He also will administer Pennsylvania programs of the Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications.
"Tabb Bishop will join Verizon at a critical time of transformation within the telecommunications industry," said William B. Petersen, president of Verizon Pennsylvania. "Tabb's extensive knowledge of Pennsylvania government, his public policy experience, and his knowledge of and work with nonprofit organizations will prove invaluable as Verizon steps up its delivery of broadband communications and entertainment services to Pennsylvanians.
"As one of the commonwealth's largest employers and single-largest investor in broadband technology, with a $10 billion investment in the state over the past 10 years, we must join hands with local business and government, as well as the education and economic development communities and others, to ensure that Pennsylvanians are equipped to meet the challenges of a knowledge-based economy," Petersen said.
Bishop said, "I look forward to this opportunity with Verizon. My time at Temple University has been rich and satisfying, but I leave knowing that a promising future for this premier provider of education lies in the very capable hands of the university's president, Ann Weaver Hart. My experience at Temple will serve me well with Verizon, a premier employer and corporate citizen committed to improving literacy and promoting the use of technology in such critical fields as education and health care delivery."
Prior to his position at Temple University, Bishop worked in government relations and served as director of the Philadelphia delegation to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In 2002, PoliticsPA named Bishop one of the Rising Stars in Pennsylvania public affairs.
A graduate of Hampton University in Virginia, Bishop resides in Philadelphia.
