Verizon Supports 170 Hawaii Nonprofit Groups to Promote Literacy, Technology and Work Force Development

HONOLULU -- Verizon reaffirmed its commitment to the communities that the company serves in Hawaii by providing grants in 2004 for a broad range of literacy, work force development, technology and human service programs.
The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, last year donated $800,000 to more than 170 nonprofit groups in Hawaii. Nationwide, the foundation donated more than $71.4 million to charitable and nonprofit organizations, including matching $18.7 million in donations from employees.
"We're pleased to continue investing in the communities we serve through strategic partnerships with organizations that support the residents of our state," said Verizon Hawaii President Mel Horikami. "And our employees are exceptionally generous, contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars and applying for matching funds from the Verizon Foundation to support the non-profits they chose."
Recipients of major grants in 2004 included:
- Kaiser Foundation Health Plan -- $15,000 to support its Reach Out and Read program. Kaiser, which encourages family reading, particularly during the early childhood years, will use the majority of the funds to purchase books to provide to children and their parents.
- Royal School -- $10,000 to continue its Reading Mastery, Language for Learning, Open Court, and Corrective Reading programs.
- Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii -- $10,000 to implement Project JOBS, a business retention and expansion program designed to identify and address impediments to business success in Hawaii, improve the business climate, create jobs, and strengthen the economy. The program's overall goal is to ensure that Hawaii companies remain competitive and can contribute to a stable, healthy economy.
In addition to the Verizon Foundation grants, Verizon Hawaii employee contributions, combined with the foundation's match, totaled over $300,000. The foundation's Verizon Volunteers program encourages employees to volunteer in their communities and provides matching gifts to the nonprofit organizations that employees support.
In 2004, the Verizon Foundation awarded more than 26,000 grants totaling more than $70 million to charitable and nonprofit agencies that focus on improving basic and computer literacy, enriching communities through technology, and creating a skilled work force. The foundation uses its resources in the United States and abroad to develop partnerships in technology and connect them with organizations serving the needs of diverse communities, people with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, and the economically and socially disadvantaged.
