NEWARK, N.J. - Verizon employees and retirees will join parents, teachers and students on Saturday, May 8, for the African-American Children's Book Festival here. The event, at the Newark Public Library, will feature a full day of literacy-related activities.

The festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will offer children a chance to meet numerous authors and illustrators, and participate in special readings and storytelling. In addition, hundreds of books will be available for purchase, including titles for all ages -- many with African-American and Latino themes.

Members of the East Orange Telecom Pioneers and Verizon's CITE (Consortium of Information and Telecommunications Executives) organization will be on hand assisting with the sale and related activities.

"We believe this is an outstanding opportunity to promote literacy in New Jersey's largest city," said Maurice Brown, Verizon New Jersey external affairs director. "Book festivals offer young people new opportunities to learn and succeed."

The Newark Preschool Council and Kids Cultural Books of Stanford, Conn., are producing the Newark festival. Part of the proceeds will go to support a local nonprofit organization.

Support of events like this is part of Verizon's overall commitment to leading the effort to increase literacy levels in the United States. Through its signature Verizon Reads program and the Verizon Literacy Network, the company works to increase community and corporate awareness, raise funds, encourage collaboration among literacy providers, and engage employees in supporting literacy programs.
