VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. -- Verizon customers in the Vineyard Haven area of Martha's Vineyard will benefit from more than $1 million worth of technical upgrades in the company's local switching center.
The project, scheduled for completion by the end of April, will increase dialing capacity and enhance digital transmission speeds. The center serves nearly 15,000 phone lines on the island.
"This project confirms Verizon's commitment to build and maintain a state-of-the-art telecommunications network throughout Massachusetts," said Donna Cupelo, region president Verizon Massachusetts/Rhode Island. "We continue to upgrade our infrastructure in urban and rural areas in order to provide all our customers with better quality service, as well as the platform for high-speed access to the Internet, work-at-home capabilities and a host of other advanced services."
In addition to deploying the latest technology, Verizon is increasing its presence as a long-distance service provider in New England and throughout the country. On March 7, the company began offering its easy-to-understand, long-distance calling plans in nearby Rhode Island. Verizon has gained more than 600,000 long-distance customers in Massachusetts since last April, when it began providing the service in the Bay State. The company is currently awaiting Federal Communications Commission approval to sell long-distance service in Vermont and Maine.
"From upgrading local switching centers to providing long-distance service, Verizon is helping consumers and businesses make progress every day, " said Cupelo.
