Verizon is urging residents and business owners in Swain County to assist the company and law enforcement officials by reporting criminals who are stealing telephone cables and leaving hundreds of area customers without service.
Just last week, nearly 1,000 feet of copper telephone cables were stolen at different locations in the county, particularly in the Bryson City area. These criminal acts have created telephone service outages and public safety concerns for hundreds of Verizon customers, including local businesses.
"These thefts not only affect telephone service, but they put people's lives at risk," said Stan Pace, Verizon's vice president of public affairs, policy and communications in North Carolina. "Verizon will not tolerate these acts and is fully cooperating with state and local law enforcement authorities to find and prosecute those responsible."
Verizon is asking for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of any person who is responsible for the theft or destruction of Verizon property, or is responsible for the sale or purchase of Verizon property known to have been stolen.
The company urges anyone with information about these crimes to contact the Swain County Sheriff's office at 828-488-0159 or the North Carolina State Police at 919-733-7952. Also, contact Verizon's Security Control Center at 800-997-3287.
