In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents, Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless provider, today announced that it has expanded its digital network in Rockport, Massachusetts. Using code division multiple access (CDMA) digital technology, the new cell site will provide improved wireless coverage and capacity in Rockport.
The new cell site is part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar investment to improve and extend the reach of the Verizon Wireless nationwide network. Much of the investment is being used to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless products and services in the New England Region. Last year, the company invested $200 million in its network in New England.
CDMA digital wireless technology provides wireless users with greater call clarity and security, longer battery life and talk time and the ability to use advanced wireless services such as Internet access and short messaging service (SMS) for sending and receiving text messages.
"This digital network upgrade will provide our customers with improved wireless coverage when using our voice and data services," said David Heverling, Northeast Area Vice President of Network for Verizon Wireless.
In addition, the newly introduced Verizon Wireless Express Network is capable of data transmission speeds up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps). The Express Network gives users full Internet access, intranet access and traditional email functionality at unprecedented speeds for wireless access. Users should expect average speeds between 40 and 60 kbps, significantly higher than speeds being produced by competing technologies and comparable to what PC users get when using a dial-up Internet service. The Express Network also provides enhanced voice capacity.
