Network Upgrade Uses Latest Technology to Increase Call-Handling Capacity

Verizon Wireless has completed work that increases by at least 33 percent the number of calls its extensive wireless network can handle for customers in Harford County, Maryland by deploying the latest code division multiple access (CDMA) digital call handling equipment.

For customers, the new equipment means improved voice service and fewer dropped calls.

"With this significant wireless network upgrade, we're providing our local business and consumer customers with the technology and capabilities they've been asking for," said Patrick Devlin, president of Verizon Wireless' Washington-Baltimore-Virginia Region.

Customer growth, greater usage due to high value pricing like SingleRateSM national and
regional calling plans, and the popularity of its Mobile Web wireless Internet services are driving the local demand for the company's wireless services. Staying ahead of the wireless growth curve requires continuing network expansion and enhancements.

Verizon Wireless is investing more than $200 million in its network in the Washington-Baltimore-Virginia region as part of the company's nationwide $4 billion network improvement program in 2001 to offer customers service on the most extensive wireless network in the U.S.
