Verizon Wireless, Indiana Repertory Theatre Team Up To Combat Domestic Violence

Local Collection Drive Supports The Julian Center

February 13, 2003

Central Indiana residents can make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims by donating old wireless phones on Friday, Feb. 21, in a one-day collection drive sponsored by Verizon Wireless and the Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT). Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, will donate $1 for each phone collected that day to The Julian Center.

"This drive is a natural extension of our HopeLineSM program, which uses previously owned wireless phones to help domestic violence victims in threatening situations go about their day-to-day lives with less fear," said Wayne White, president of Verizon Wireless' Indiana Region.

Through its exclusive HopeLine program, Verizon Wireless puts its services and equipment to work to help prevent domestic violence. The company collects used phones to be refurbished or recycled and/or sold. With the funds raised from those sales, Verizon Wireless purchases wireless phones to donate with airtime to victims of domestic and makes monetary contributions to local domestic violence organizations, such as The Julian Center.

"The IRT is pleased to collect these phones as we share 'The Lion in Winter' with our Friday audience," said Meg Gammage-Tucker, the theater's director of advancement. "We have a long-standing relationship with Verizon Wireless, and this special collection will help women in our area who need to re-establish some normalcy in their lives."

During the past 12 months, The Julian Center's shelter provided housing for 1,109 women and children, while more than 400 women and children participated in therapy at the Counseling Center.

"Verizon Wireless is generously providing funding to our shelter and supporting the arts through the IRT," said Marilyn Bedford, community relations director of The Julian Center. "We are grateful for their efforts to collaborate with us in support of women and children who are victims of domestic violence."
