Verizon Wireless Turns Recycled Cell Phones Into Cash For Essex County, NJ Shelter
Company Donates $4,000 to Help Families at Risk
September 6, 2002
Safe House, an Essex County assistance center for domestic violence victims, today received $1,000 from Verizon Wireless to provide services for families at risk. The donation was made as a result of a HopeLineSM Phone Recycling drive held recently to benefit the shelter.
During the month of April, area residents were asked to bring their no-longer-used wireless phones to the Verizon Wireless Communications Store in the Jersey Gardens Mall. The company pledged a cash contribution for every phone donated and new service agreement signed. The phones were shipped to a national collection center where they were refurbished, recycled or sold.
"The HopeLine Phone Recycling program is an easy way for community-minded citizens to support local domestic violence organizations as they help abused women rebuild their lives," said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro Region. "Domestic violence does not discriminate. It's all around us in places most of us would never imagine. Citizens who support the program could very well be helping their own friends or neighbors."
Similar recycling drives were held in New York in Rockland and Westchester counties. Verizon Wireless has donated a total of $4,000 to domestic violence agencies in the three counties where the drives took place. Since 1995, the company has donated or recycled more than 750,000 phones nationwide and nearly 50,000 phones in the New York Metro area.
