Verizon's Support for California Nonprofit Groups Exceeds $8 Million in 2007

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Verizon pledged more than $8 million to California nonprofits this year for programs that will combat domestic violence, improve healthcare and promote education in technology, literacy, the arts and culture throughout the state. 

Funding went to a diverse group of organizations including Peace Over Violence ($300,000), the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center ($99,000) and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles ($47,140).

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications and one of the largest corporate foundations in the world, awarded more than $69 million in grants in 2006.

"Verizon has a long-standing tradition of supporting organizations that improve the quality of life in the communities we serve," said Tim McCallion, president of Verizon's West region. "The 273 nonprofit groups funded in 2007 all share Verizon's vision of creating opportunities for Californians to lead healthier, safer and more productive lives."

The grants awarded by Verizon in California in 2007 include:

  • Korean Health Education Information and Research Center - $85,000
  • Alameda County Family Justice Center - $57,500
  • Alliance for the Arts - $50,000
  • Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County - $50,000
  • Martha's Village and Kitchen Inc. - $50,000
  • Redlands Community Hospital Foundation - $45,000
  • La Maestra Family Clinic Inc. - $43,000
  • Wellness Community Valley Ventura Inc. - $42,000
  • Jenesse Center Inc. - $40,000
  • St. Bernardine Medical Center Foundation - $35,000
  • Victor Valley Domestic Violence - $35,000
  • Victor Valley Community Hospital - $30,000
  • Central American Resource Center - $25,000
  • East Los Angeles Women's Center - $25,000
  • Marin Services for Women - $25,000
  • San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center - $25,000
  • Youth Connection of Ventura County - $25,000
