Wireless Phone Donations Aid In The Fight Against Domestic Violence In Tennessee

Mary Kay Inc. Representatives Collect More than 200 phones for Verizon Wireless' HopeLineSM program

January 17, 2002

When Charlene Grubbs asked her fellow Mary Kay independent beauty consultants to help collect pre-owned wireless phone donations, she didn't expect to get such an enormous response.

Grubbs and her team members from Hendersonville, Tenn., collected more than 200 wireless phones through local churches and special events and donated them to Verizon Wireless to be used in programs against domestic violence. Through Verizon Wireless' HopeLineSM program, the phones will be inspected, refurbished, sold and/or programmed by technicians so that at the touch of a button, victims of domestic violence in Middle Tennessee can call 911 and other emergency numbers for help. All proceeds from the phones will be given to non-profit domestic violence advocacy organizations and used to purchase handsets for victims.

Grubbs and her fellow Mary Kay beauty consultants originally planned to ship the phones to the Mary Kay Inc. corporate headquarters in Dallas, Texas to be distributed and used for domestic violence programs in the Dallas area. But when Connie White, vice president of the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation, noticed Verizon Wireless as a recognized corporate leader in the fight against domestic violence, she alerted Grubbs to drop the phones at the nearest Verizon Wireless retail store so they may be used in programs in Middle Tennessee.

"One of the most important uses of wireless technology is for safety," said Sandy Maloney, Verizon Wireless' North Middle Tennessee retail general manager. "The importance of communication drastically increases for domestic violence victims in abusive situations. Verizon Wireless recognizes this and takes every opportunity to support emergency and safety communications programs."

The Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation supports various programs against domestic violence, as well as research on cancers affecting women.

"Mary Kay is a company dedicated to enriching women's lives, and the prevention of violence against women is a top priority for our Foundation," said White. "This donation is just one example of how the hundreds of thousands of women in the Mary Kay community support domestic violence programs across the nation."
HopeLine, launched nationally in October 2001, is an ongoing program directly benefiting victims of domestic violence. As part of the program, Verizon Wireless also makes financial contributions to national domestic violence organizations such as the Family Violence Prevention Fund and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, as well as other select community interest groups.
