Senior Citizens in Western Maryland Enjoy Free Health Screenings, One-on-One Wireless Training and Information on Discounted Phone Services
Hundreds of senior citizens gathered this month in western Maryland for free health screenings, vital healthcare information, one-on-one training on how to navigate the features on their wireless devices, information on discounted phone services, and tips on managing in this technological age.
Two senior symposiums were held on Thursday (May 16) – from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hager Hall Conference Center in Hagerstown, and from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. at the Cumberland Senior Center. A third symposium was on Friday (May 17) from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mary Browning Senior Center in Oakland.
“Verizon has been working with senior communities throughout Maryland as part of an initiative to support this important population of citizens and consumers,” said Tabb Bishop, Verizon’s vice president of government affairs. “We were proud to partner with state and local organizations in offering these free symposiums for western Maryland's elderly population where beneficial healthcare and information on other services were available.”
During these tough economic times, Verizon and the Maryland Office of People’s Counsel also are raising awareness of federal and state Lifeline and Link-Up discounted phone programs to ensure that limited-income Marylanders get access to necessary telephone service. These programs provide significant assistance to eligible customers in setting up and paying for telephone service, and help them to stay connected.
On hand with Verizon to provide information and answer questions from senior citizens were representatives from Allegany College of Maryland, Allegany County Area Agency on Aging, Alzheimer’s Association, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the Governor’s Office of Health Care Reform, Maryland Department of Aging, Mental Health Association of Maryland, State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, United Seniors of Maryland Education Foundation and Washington County Cares.
