WitNY works to close gender gap in tech.
Here’s a sobering stat: Over the past 20 years, the percentage of computer science degrees awarded to women has declined steeply from 37% to 18%. Meanwhile, the percentage of women graduating from college with a degree in a technology-related discipline is less than 1%, compared with 6% of men.
That’s a problem.
That’s why we’re a founding and charter sponsor of Women in Technology and Entrepreneurship in New York (WitNY), a non-profit created in 2016 with Cornell Tech and the City University of New York (CUNY). This program is dedicated to inspiring more women to enter and succeed in technology fields.
Some of our WitNY interns recently presented the culmination of their project: a customized skill for a virtual assistant. “This skill will one day help Verizon customers,” said Wintern Stephanie Yung. “They will be able to ask questions to Alexa like ‘Where is my order?’ or ‘How much data have I used?’”
Fantastic work and another step towards closing the gender gap in tech.
Verizon is a founding partner of WiTNY which will be expanding to three new cities across the United States, starting with Chicago.
Waste Management Phoenix Open becomes first 5G golf tournament.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open (aka “the People’s Open”) has always been one of the most well-attended events on the PGA tour. This year was no exception, making history as the first professional 5G golf tournament.
On Sunday, as Webb Simpson tore through the course on his way to victory, spectators with 5G phones followed his progress with data speeds reaching 1.3 gigabits per second. That’s all thanks to our team setting up 5G COWS (Cell On Wheels) around the course.
Not only that, we put 5G phones in the hands of Phoenix firefighters at the event as a thank you from the V Team.
Now that’s a well-played round.
