Volunteer Hits a Home Run For the Homeless

Avid Minnesota Twins fan, Tamara Hanson, was picked from a select group of season ticket holders for the volunteer experience of a lifetime.

On Monday, July 6th, 2015, Tamara joined several Twins employees and many other volunteers from area businesses on Target Field to build dressers for Bridging — a local nonprofit that provides quality furniture and household goods to help people transitioning out of homelessness and poverty.

Most inspiring for Tamara was meeting Bridging founder, Fran Heitzman, who watched the dresser construction on the field that day. “He has the spunk of my grandmother and a powerful story,” she said. After retiring, this successful entrepreneur volunteered to do maintenance work for a local church.

A woman came to him with a crib she no longer needed — this simple act sparked a big idea in Fran that is now providing dignity to more than 240 people a week to help rebuild their lives. “After just two hours, we built 50 dressers, and I proudly wore my Verizon shirt on the field. I wanted to show that Verizon is a great corporate advocate of volunteerism,” said Tamara. After the event, she shared the motivating Bridging experience with her boss and plans to do more for the organization.

Throughout the month of September 2015, Tamara organized a blanket drive. Her National Retail and Local Indirect teams, combined with other departments in the office, collected 99 donated blankets. Her favorite Bridging founder quote is, “Good people get together and do good things, making good things happen every day.” Tamara is proof of good things happen when Verizon volunteers bring good people together!
