Bell Atlantic Mobile Says Wireless Phone Can Be Personal Safety Net

Bedminster, NJ —

You see them everywhere: glove compartments, purses, briefcases. They're walking down the street, sitting in traffic, and lying on the beach or by the pool. They're wireless phones, and despite their widespread use for a variety of reasons, from convenience to business, they all have one use in common -- SAFETY.

As you begin preparing for vacations and outdoor activities this summer, knowing how to use a wireless phone in the event of an emergency is just as important as having one. Following are some tips from Bell Atlantic Mobile for using your cell phone as your personal safety net.

  • Carry it always. A cell phone is a safety net for you and others. Use your cell phone to report highway accidents and aggressive drivers, when you're lost or broken down, or to call for first aid when bike riding, in-line skating, or swimming in a neighbor's backyard pool.
  • Check your battery. If your cell phone is reserved for emergency use, be sure to check and charge the battery before taking a road trip. You may even want to bring along a spare battery or keep a lighter adapter in your car.
  • Press the SEND button after dialing 9-1-1. Help is only a few buttons away, but you must press SEND for the call to go through, even when dialing 9-1-1.
  • Know your cell phone number. Whether you have to give it out to emergency personnel, the babysitter, or a teenager to check in, knowing they can reach you will give you peace of mind.
  • When behind the wheel use common sense. Safe driving is your first responsibility.

Public Safety Net

More than 100 police departments throughout the country use wireless technology for maintaining public safety, according to Bell Atlantic Mobile. Whether it's for checking motor vehicle and criminal databases from wireless laptops in their police cars, or giving wireless phones pre-programmed to dial 9-1-1 to potential domestic violence victims, law enforcement agencies depend on the cellular network to ensure public safety. You too can depend on the cellular network as your personal safety net.
