BEACHWOOD, OHIO and BEDMINSTER, NJ — Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, and Allen Telecom Inc. (NYSE: ALN) announced today the completion of a second successful field trial of Allen Telecom's Geometrix® wireless E911 caller location system. Results of this trial, conducted in Washington, DC's Northern Virginia suburbs, were consistent with the earlier Verizon Wireless/Allen Telecom Geometrix field trial in Lexington, Kentucky, announced on September 25, 2000.
The trial continued a series of tests of the Geometrix system, which was designed to meet the Federal Communications Commission's Phase II requirements for more accurate E911 caller location information.
Geometrix location system equipment was installed in Verizon Wireless base station cellular sites to cover the trial area located in Northern Virginia's Reston/Dulles area.) The area is comprised of residential zones interspersed with low to high-rise office complexes, malls and a town center.
The trial established more than 2,000 data test points using the CDMA Development Group (CDG) test plan, also used in the earlier Lexington trial. Test locations covered a comprehensive array of emergency calling conditions, including from within structures of various types and composition, from various levels within structures, and from moving and stationary vehicles. All test calls were made from a variety of standard commercially available handsets operating in their normal mode and with their standard integrated antennas. As with the Lexington trial, only existing cellular network antennas were used and the network was operating in its normal mode during the tests.
Allen Telecom's Grayson Wireless President Terry Garner said, "I am delighted that the positive results of the latest Geometrix tests were consistent with the earlier successful Verizon Wireless trial, again meeting expectations for the product."
Ted Hoffman, vice president of technology development of Verizon Wireless said, "This successful trial is an important step as Verizon Wireless furthers its plans to meet the FCC E911 mandate."
The Phase II FCC wireless E911 location requirements go into effect in 2001.
