Verizon Wireless Expands Network Capacity, Enhances Service with New Cell Site in Galena, MD

LAUREL, MD — Verizon Wireless has placed a new cell site in Galena, Md. to add capacity to the company's network. The new site will enhance the company's digital wireless network to deliver advanced wireless voice and data services to its customers. The company has also completed work that more than doubles the number of calls its extensive wireless network can handle for customers by deploying the latest code division multiple access (CDMA) digital call handling equipment in its analog cell site in Galena.

The new capacity and coverage mean improved voice service, fewer dropped calls, greater call clarity and longer battery life. In addition, the digital service will enable customers to use wireless data devices such as those delivered on the Verizon Wireless Smartphone.

"With this significant addition to our wireless network, we're providing our local business and consumer customers with the technology and capabilities they've been asking for," said Patrick Devlin, president of Verizon Wireless' Washington-Baltimore-Virginia Region.

Customer growth, greater usage due to high value pricing like SingleRateSM national and regional calling plans, and the popularity of Mobile Web wireless Internet services are driving the local demand for the company's wireless services. Staying ahead of the wireless growth curve requires continuing network expansion and enhancements.

Verizon Wireless is investing more than $200 million in its network in the Washington-Baltimore-Virginia region as part of the company's nationwide $4 billion network improvement program in 2001 to offer customers service on the most extensive wireless network in the U.S.
