MILWAUKEE, WI — Verizon Wireless, a corporate leader in the fight against domestic violence, is joining forces with the Milwaukee Bucks, The Business Journal and Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence (CAEPV) to sponsor a luncheon program and seminar, Domestic Violence & The Workplace, for Milwaukee-area business executives on Thursday, June 27, at the Bradley Center, 1001 N. Fourth St. in Milwaukee.
Denny Strigl, president and CEO of Verizon Wireless, will deliver the keynote address at the June 27 event. He will discuss the toll of domestic violence on a business's workforce and on the communities in which it does business. Kimberly Wells, a nationally recognized expert on workplace domestic violence and executive director of the CAEPV, will be a featured speaker. She will present a "Blueprint to Change Corporate Culture and Awareness of Domestic Violence."
Mark Sabljak, publisher of the Business Journal, and Ernie Grunfeld, general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks, will also address the event, and a domestic violence survivor will offer a personal testimonial.
Overall, the program will explore the hidden cost and impact of domestic violence on businesses and in the workplace and will offer attendees steps to recognize and respond to employees experiencing threats or instances of domestic violence.
A limited number of reservations are available for the free program, which opens with a reception at 11:30 a.m. and concludes after the luncheon program at 1:30 p.m. Reservations may be made by contacting Joan Zirbes at 414-291-7620.
In a recent survey, 37 percent of women who experience domestic violence said it had an impact on their work in the form of tardiness, missed workdays and their ability to keep jobs or be promoted. It is also reported that medical expenses associated with domestic violence cost American businesses between $3 and $5 billion a year.
"Domestic violence is an epidemic that can affect anyone," said Tracy Nolan, president, Wisconsin/Illinois Region, Verizon Wireless. "We hope this event will serve as a wake-up call for many businesses that think they are immune to domestic violence and its devastating impact."
Verizon Wireless has a history of commitment to domestic violence awareness and prevention. The company's national HopeLineSM community service program puts wireless products, services and resources to work to combat domestic violence. HopeLine includes a nationwide recycling program that distributes previously owned wireless phones to domestic violence victims and supports non-profit domestic violence advocacy groups. In 2001 alone, Verizon Wireless donated more than 4,000 wireless phones in addition to airtime, and more than $500,000 in monetary and other contributions to prevention programs across the country.
Locally, the company has donated hundreds of emergency phones for domestic violence shelters and organizations throughout Wisconsin and has sponsored public awareness campaigns and fundraising programs in connection with its ongoing marketing sponsorships with both the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks.
Verizon Wireless is a founding participant in the Corporate Citizenship Initiative (CCI), a first-of-its kind national project that develops workplace-based programs to stop domestic violence. On behalf of CCI, Verizon Wireless sponsored the creation of workplace awareness/education posters to further the message that domestic violence is a business issue that must be addressed.
