Verizon Wireless In Connecticut Encourages Recycling Old Phones For Earth Day

WALLINGFORD, CT — Give back to the Earth and your community by donating your no-longer-used wireless phone to the Verizon Wireless HopeLineSM eco-friendly recycling program. With as little effort as it takes to clean out a junk drawer, an old wireless phone can become a lifeline to a victim of domestic violence rather than a landfill addition.

HopeLine, a Verizon Wireless charitable initiative, focuses on putting wireless products and services into the hands of domestic violence victims, providing them with a communication link to police in emergency situations. Every Verizon Wireless Communications Store accepts donations of wireless phones that are no longer being used, even if the phones are old, broken, or from another carrier. Phones are either refurbished or sold for parts.

As a result of HopeLine and related phone recycling programs the company has organized since 1995, Verizon Wireless has collected more than one million used wireless phones for the benefit of domestic violence victims and advocacy groups.

"Wireless phones and batteries should be always be recycled, just like household batteries and other electronic equipment," said Bob Stott, president, Verizon Wireless, New England Region. "Many people discard their old wireless phones for newer models that offer features like E-mail, text messaging and customized ring tones. In fact, the average cell phone user upgrades to a new phone every two years. By donating an old wireless phone to HopeLine, people are doing their part to be environmentally responsible AND contributing to an important cause," added Stott.
