BEDMINSTER, NJ — Consumers who wish to keep their wireless numbers when changing their wireless service provider may do so beginning November 24, 2003. Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation's largest and most reliable wireless network, is committed to easing this transition for consumers. Following are tips on how to make wireless local number portability a hassle-free reality.

Check Eligibility - Call or visit the new wireless service provider to check if your number is eligible.

Keep it Live - Don't cancel the current service before switching. The number must be active to switch.

Leave a Paper Trail - To ease the process, have a copy of the current contract and the most recent bill to ensure important information is readily available. Read the contract carefully to learn about any applicable early termination fees and other contractual requirements.

Cover the Bases - Have an alternate contact number for emergencies in case the port takes longer than anticipated.

Keep Records - Write down contact information from the phone before beginning the porting process.

Don't Delegate - Only the authorized account holder can switch a number. However, the process can take place in a retail store or over the phone.

Cut the Cord - Consumers can also port between landline and wireless providers.

Customers can learn more about local number portability and products and services from the nation's number one service provider online at, by calling a Verizon Wireless Customer Representative at 1-800-2 JOIN IN, or by visiting a Verizon Wireless Communications Store.
