WACO, TX — To enhance network quality and wireless coverage across Texas, Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless service provider, activated nine new cell towers in the Waco area in the fourth quarter of 2003. The new towers will provide customers with improved wireless coverage and capacity, faster data transfer rates, and fewer dropped calls when using a Verizon Wireless handset or data device.

In 2003, the company invested $194 million and activated a total of 217 new towers in Texas, providing customers with access to the most extensive wireless voice and data network in the United States. Over the past three years, Verizon Wireless has invested $12 billion nationwide in network improvements.

"We've seen strong wireless growth in Waco, and the activation of these new cell towers in the area reflects our dedication to anticipating the demands on our wireless network and providing the highest overall quality of service to our customers," said David McCarley, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless' Texas region.

The following cell towers were added to enhance coverage in and around Waco:

  • A new cell tower was activated a mile south of Calvert on Highway 6 to expand coverage north and through the city of Calvert.
  • East of Waco along State Highway 6, a new tower will provide coverage to Riesel and Highway 6 between Hallsburg and Marlin.
  • A new cell tower will provide coverage to the southern parts of Marlin, west to the Brazos River and southeast on State Highway 6.
  • A new tower was activated near Reagan on State Highway 6 to enhance coverage to southeastern border of Falls County, west to the Brazos River and east to F.M. Road 2413.
  • A new tower north of Marlin will improve coverage to the northern parts of Marlin and Marlin City Lake, covering the surrounding area west to the Brazos River and east to the intersection of County Road 176 and State Highway 7.
  • Located at the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 14 between Hammond and Bremond, the new cell tower will expand north on Highway 6 from Calvert.
  • Located north of Gatesville and extending west to F.M. 116 and east along U.S. Highway 84, this new tower will provide coverage to the city of Gatesville as well as many of the military personnel from nearby Fort Hood.
  • A new cell tower northwest of Waco will enhance coverage to the town of China Spring as well as the area bounded by State Highway 6, the Brazos River, the McLennan County line and Wortham Bend Road.
  • A new tower located near State Highway 6 east of Waco will provide coverage to Hallsburg, Tradinghouse Creek Lake and Lake Creek Lake. This new tower will extend coverage as far north as F.M. Road 2957 and as far south as F.M. Road 1860.

"We continue to make significant investments in our network because our customers tell us that network quality is the number one reason they choose Verizon Wireless," said McCarley. "Superior network quality is even more important now that customers can switch wireless service providers and take their number with them."
