SHREVEPORT, LA — Verizon Wireless, the nation's leading wireless provider, continued to enhance its digital network in Louisiana by activating two new cell sites in the Shreveport area in the first quarter of 2004, following the activation of five new cell sites last year in Shreveport. The cell site expansion is part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services, including two-way text messaging, picture messaging and Internet access.
"Over the last three years, Verizon Wireless has invested roughly one billion dollars every 90 days -- more than $12 billion -- in its nationwide network, offering customers access to the most extensive wireless voice and data network in the United States," said David McCarley, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless.
As part of its commitment to provide customers with the highest quality of service, Verizon Wireless activated the following cell sites to enhance wireless coverage in Shreveport:
- Located in northwest Shreveport and north of Cross Lake, this cell site provides coverage to the area from Highway 71 west to the Shreveport city boundary.
- Located in western Shreveport south of Cross Lake, this cell site enhances coverage to the area west of Interstate 220 and north of Interstate 20.
In addition to providing the nation's largest and highest-quality digital network, Verizon Wireless offers NationalAccess, a nationwide high-speed wireless data network, providing fast wireless Internet service with bursts up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps). NationalAccess gives users full Internet access, intranet access and traditional e-mail functionality on their laptop at unprecedented speeds for wireless access. Users can expect average speeds between 40 and 60 kbps, significantly higher than speeds being produced by competing technologies and comparable to, if not faster than, using dial-up Internet service.
In select markets, Verizon Wireless also offers BroadbandAccess, which provides average transfer speeds of 300-500 kbps. Verizon Wireless will roll out BroadbandAccess in key Louisiana cities in 2004 and 2005.
