DOVER, DE — Verizon Wireless is helping NASCAR fans "make the call" at a series of racing events taking place at the Dover Downs International Speedway on June 4 - 6. The nation's leading wireless carrier will deploy a mobile cell site or "COW," for Cell On Wheels, to substantially increase network capacity needed to handle the wireless call volume expected during the events.
The "COW" is a fully functional, mobile cell site that increases wireless capacity in the area and handles both wireless voice and data service.
"Since Dover Downs is one of the most popular race destinations in the Northeast and hosts some of the biggest crowds to see a sporting event between New York and North Carolina, we are expecting a significant increase in wireless usage over what we would normally experience in this area," said Clint Pagano, director of network engineering, Verizon Wireless. "The COW will ensure we have enough capacity to handle those calls and provide the quality of service our customers expect," Pagano added.
In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents, Verizon Wireless also recently completed work that increases the number of calls its extensive wireless network can handle for customers in the Dover area. The new capacity increase is part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless voice and data services in the tri-state region, like two-way TXT messaging, Picture Messaging, downloadable applications like ringtones and games, and wireless Internet access.
'Test Man' Isn't Just a Commercial CharacterThe capacity increase and COW are also part of Verizon Wireless' commitment to offer customers the most reliable service available on the nation's largest wireless network. The company's 'most reliable network' claim is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women who inspired the company's national advertising campaign. The engineers conduct more than 300,000 call attempts monthly on Verizon Wireless' and other national wireless carriers' networks while traveling over 100,000 miles of the most frequently traveled roadways nationwide in specially equipped, company-owned quality test vehicles.
