URBANA, IL — To stay ahead of its growing customer base and demand for its voice and data services, Verizon Wireless has activated two new cell sites in Champaign County to improve the company's digital network coverage and capacity in northeast Urbana along the I-74 and Highway 150 interchange, and along the roadways east of Route 49 near the towns of Homer, Sidney and Broadlands.
The new cell sites increase the strength of the Verizon Wireless network signal, improve signal penetration into area buildings and enable more customers to use their wireless phones concurrently. As a result, Verizon Wireless customers will experience fewer dropped calls and clearer reception while talking on their wireless phones, handling data applications (such as TXT and Picture Messaging) or downloading games and ring tones with the company's Get It Now® services.
"Over the past few years, our customer base in Champaign County has grown and the average number of minutes our customers use their wireless phones has increased, resulting in the need for these new cell sites," said Tracy Nolan, presidentIllinois/Wisconsin Region, Verizon Wireless. "This network enhancement reflects our ongoing commitment to meet the growing needs of our customers and to provide them with the high quality of service they expect from Verizon Wireless."
Activation of the new cell sites is a part of Verizon Wireless' continuous effort to increase capacity and augment the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Illinois and across the country. Nationally each year, the company invests about $1 billion every 90 days to improve and expand what is already the most reliable wireless network in the United States. This year, the company has spent more than $38 million on its network in Central Illinois to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless products and services.
