Verizon Wireless Donates Generator To Platte County, Kansas, Community Center

OVERLAND PARK, KS — Verizon Wireless will announce the donation of a 400 KW Kohler generator to the new Southern Platte County Community Center in Parkville, Mo., tomorrow at the center's grand opening. The generator enables the community center to act as an emergency shelter for Platte County residents and visitors.

From the beginning, plans called for the community center's shelter to be used to house the county's elderly along with those whose homes are severely damaged or destroyed during disasters.

"While the building was designed to act as an emergency shelter, the funds were not allocated for a generator during construction," said Mark Owen, captain, Emergency Services Division, Platte County Sheriff's Department. "Verizon Wireless is the only business to make a private donation to the center, and we are very thankful that they've provided us with this generous gift. The generator enables us to set up a central site that offers heat, air-conditioning, hot meals and electric oxygen generator plug-ins for those in need."

"Verizon Wireless continually strives to give back to our customers through community outreach," said Mark Crumpton, president—Kansas/Missouri Region, Verizon Wireless. "We are happy to help Platte County provide a safe and secure emergency shelter for their residents."

The center, which opens Feb. 19, is located at 8875 Clark Avenue in Parkville. Verizon Wireless, along with county and YMCA officials, members and partners will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. for the center's grand opening. The $12.8 million center, operated by the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, includes a wellness center, indoor aquatics center and two fitness studios among other features.
