Verizon Wireless Expands Its Network In Manhattan, New York, With Nine New Cell Sites

ORANGEBURG, NY — In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for residents, commuters and tourists in Manhattan, Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, has expanded its network with nine new cell sites.

The new Manhattan cell sites will improve network coverage and capacity in the following areas:

  • On the Upper West Side, in the areas surrounding W. 196th Street and Fort Tryon Park; St. Nicholas and W. 190th Street and High Bridge Park; along Harlem River Drive, from W 171st to 152nd Street; and along Riverside Drive, Broadway and Amsterdam Avenues from 152nd to 144th Streets.

  • On the Upper East Side, between 107th and 81st Streets, from Wards Island past 2nd Avenue.

  • In Midtown, Columbus Circle and portions of Central Park; 41st to 37th Streets between 7th and 9th Avenues; near the Midtown Tunnel, between 1st and 3rd Avenues, from 38th to 35th Streets.

Verizon Wireless invested more than $5.5 billion in its nationwide network last year alone to stay ahead of the growing demand for the company's voice and data services, like two-way TXT Messaging, Picture Messaging and the new V CAST service which brings TV and other multimedia services to wireless phones over the company's high speed broadband wireless network.

Demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the third quarter as the company added 1.9 million net new customers. Verizon Wireless now serves 49.3 million customers nationwide.

Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess data network is the largest high-speed wireless broadband network in the U.S. BroadbandAccess service, now available in much of the New York Metro area and in 171 major US cities, provides customers with Internet access, access to corporate intranets and traditional e-mail functionality via laptop computers and personal digital assistants.

The company's investment in its wireless network also is part of Verizon Wireless' commitment to offer customers the most reliable service available in the nation. The company's 'most reliable network' claim is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women who inspired the company's national advertising campaign. The engineers conduct more than 300,000 call attempts monthly on Verizon Wireless' and other national wireless carriers' networks while traveling over 100,000 miles a month nationwide in specially equipped, company-owned quality test vehicles.*

* Editors Note: Test Man Ride-Along Program Specially-equipped Verizon Wireless test vehicles simultaneously test the networks of six wireless providers using a mobile laptop computer to generate calls. If you are interested in setting up an interview or ride-along test drive with your local Verizon Wireless test man or woman, please contact Lynette Viviani at 973-283-9228.
