Verizon Wireless Expands Coverage In Michigan

SOUTHFIELD, MI — Verizon Wireless today announced the completion of a major network expansion in Michigan, enabling customers in the Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Jackson and Kalamazoo markets to make voice calls, send and receive TXT and Picture Messages, access the Internet and download games and ringtones on the nation's most reliable wireless network.

The company's $30 million network investment provides continuous coverage along Interstate 94 from Detroit to Chicago. A total of 53 new cell sites were built, and additional equipment was installed on 52 existing cell sites throughout the new coverage area.

Verizon Wireless acquired the existing cell sites in August 2005, when it completed the purchase of certain spectrum licenses and operating assets from Leap Wireless International, Inc.

In addition to Battle Creek, Benton Harbor, Jackson and Kalamazoo, Verizon Wireless' newly expanded network covers the following surrounding communities:

  • (Around Battle Creek) Springfield and Brownlee Park

  • (Around Benton Harbor) Coloma, St. Joseph, Shoreham, Fair Plain, Watervliet, Paw Paw Lake, Stevensville, Lakeview and New Buffalo

  • (Around Jackson) Michigan Center and Vandercook Lake

  • (Around Kalamazoo) Constantine, Oshtemo, Portage, Richland, Schoolcraft, Texas Corner and Three Rivers

"We are very excited to expand our coverage across western Michigan," said Greg Haller, president—Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. "Now our customers living in and traveling across the western part of the state can enjoy continuous coverage along I-94 from Detroit to Chicago on the nation's most reliable wireless network."

Reliable service is fundamental to customer loyalty, and Verizon Wireless boasts the highest customer loyalty in the industry. During the third quarter of 2005, only 1.3 percent of its customers disconnected their service, which is well below the industry average.

These enhancements are part of Verizon Wireless' continuous effort to increase capacity and augment the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Michigan and across the country. Nationally, the company invested $25 billion over the past five years to improve and expand what is already the most reliable wireless network in the United States. More than $158 million of this investment was spent in 2005 to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless products and services in Michigan.
