Southern Illinois University Students And Their Parents Will Enjoy More Reliable Wireless Service

CARBONDALE, IL — Verizon Wireless announced today it has enhanced its network capacity by more than 50 percent for "move-in" day at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale beginning Friday, Aug. 18. The university is home to nearly 20,000 students during the school year, and most students will return to the campus this weekend.

To accommodate the expected increase in its network activity, Verizon Wireless has activated a temporary cell site and upgraded its permanent area cell sites that provide network service to the college campus and vicinity. The enhancements enable more customers to use their wireless handsets concurrently to make calls, send and receive text and picture and messages, as well as download games and ringtones.

The temporary cell site, also known as a COLT (Cell on Light Truck), is a fully functional mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity in a given area. Verizon Wireless has placed its COLT on campus near the entrance to the school's new softball stadium.

"Each year we experience a substantial surge in network activity on the campus during move-in day," said Mark Crumpton, president—Kansas/Missouri/Southern Illinois Region, Verizon Wireless. "Based on our customers' year-over-year calling patterns, we anticipate that college students and their families will be relying more heavily on their wireless handsets to keep in touch as parents help students get settled on campus. Our network is prepared to handle the expected increased activity."

These network enhancements are part of Verizon Wireless' continuous effort to increase coverage and augment the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Illinois and across the country. Verizon Wireless has invested $30 billion in the last six years-$5 billion on average every year since the company was formed-to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. In 2005, the company invested more than $150 million in its Illinois network.
