DUBLIN, OH — Verizon Wireless, owner and operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, is empowering its employees who wish to advance and grow within the organization's Midwest Area through Midwest Mobility. Now in its third year, Midwest Mobility identifies the best and brightest employees and places them in an intensive, seven-month program that enables participants to explore various career tracks within the company, discover their strengths and preferences in terms of job assignments and formulate a comprehensive individual development plan to achieve their personal goals.
"With Midwest Mobility, we are developing bench strength within our ranks," said Roger Tang, presidentOhio/Pennsylvania Region, Verizon Wireless. "We want to give our proactive employees an identifiable pathway to future leadership positions in the company. It's a win-win situation. We retain valuable employees who, in turn, help the company reach new heights."
Beyond training sessions and the establishment of individual mentor relationships, Midwest Mobility has three key components that make it unique: shadow and stretch assignments and leadership participation.
Shadow assignments pair participants with area and region leaders for two days, giving each participant hands-on exposure to the demands of a leadership position and the skills necessary to be a successful leader.
Stretch assignments are typically three-to-five days long and require an employee to become a team member in a department other than his or her own. Each participant is required to lead a project in that department-from making presentations to analyzing key metrics and offering suggestions on how to improve systems.
"By exposing participants to senior leadership and different business channels, we are giving Midwest Mobility participants a broader perspective on Verizon Wireless as a company and showing them how the pieces fit together and how they can play a role in helping the company grow," Tang noted.
One-hundred Verizon Wireless employees are enrolled currently in Midwest Mobility throughout the Midwest Area, which includes the Ohio/Pennsylvania, Great Plains, Illinois/Wisconsin, Kansas/Missouri and Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky regions. More than 20 of the participants are from the Ohio/Pennsylvania Region.
Participants in this year's Midwest Mobility program have just completed their training at a group session in Schaumburg, Ill.
