ST. LOUIS, MO — As most of us ring in the holidays, families experiencing domestic violence brace themselves for the added pressure of the season. Fortunately, the St. Louis Family Justice Center and Verizon Wireless have teamed up to provide safety for these families during this holiday season.
Verizon Wireless has donated $2,500 to the Family Justice Center for the purchase of advertising on side panels of five Metro buses. The campaign will urge victims of domestic violence to seek help. The ads, created by St. Louis graphic artist Laura Messing, will be displayed through mid-January 2007.
"The holidays are an extremely stressful time for families facing domestic violence," said Mary Burns for the Family Justice Center. "Tensions over money, family issues, overindulgence and a variety of other combustible factors make this season far less than merry for many victims. Unfortunately, many women choose to take the abuse rather than to disrupt the family during the holiday season."
Verizon Wireless, working with the Family Justice Center and many local domestic violence organizations, has underwritten the entire cost of the advertising campaign. "We are deeply committed to doing our part to help the Family Justice Center and the domestic violence organizations with which it partners to get victims to safety," said Mark Crumpton, presidentKansas/Missouri Region, Verizon Wireless. "A critical part of that effort is to show victims where to go for help and to provide additional assistance."
Burns said the outreach campaign on Metro buses is a key component to the effort because it tells victims how to get help "at the street and the neighborhood level."
The Family Justice Center, which opened in 2005, provides a one-stop resource for women and families seeking an escape from domestic violence and abuse. The U.S. Justice Department's Office of Violence Against Women picked the city of St. Louis as one of 15 justice centers for women and families throughout the country. The FJC opened with a $1.4 million grant from the Justice Department.
